Meet the Artist

Paul Stock has worked with wood for over 30 years.

Originally from Aotearoa New Zealand, his relationship with timber began as an arborist, working hands-on with trees in urban and natural environments.

He spent years working with Auckland City, caring for, removing, and understanding trees from the inside out — their structure, strength, grain, and character.

That early experience shaped the way he works today: with respect for the material and an understanding that every piece of wood carries its own history.

For the past 25 years, Paul has lived and worked in Catalunya, creating functional and sculptural pieces from locally sourced timber. Much of the wood he uses is recycled or salvaged — trees felled for safety reasons, storm-damaged timber, or wood that would otherwise go to waste.

His work is unapologetically honest. Chainsaws, hand tools, and practical techniques are part of the process, and the results reflect that: large-scale garden sculptures, solid outdoor tables, and objects made to live outside, age naturally, and tell their story over time.

Paul doesn’t try to tame the wood — he works with it.

Every piece is shaped by the material it comes from, the place it grew, and the hands that worked it.

Working With What the Land Provides

Paul works directly with the character of each piece of timber, letting the grain, knots, and natural imperfections guide the final form. His process is physical and intuitive—often beginning with a chainsaw before refining by hand—shaping wood that has already lived a life, whether from storm-felled trees, necessary pruning, or reclaimed local sources. Nothing is forced into perfection; each piece keeps the marks of its making and the story of where it came from.

If you’re interested in a custom piece, or see something in the portfolio that speaks to you, Paul is always happy to talk through ideas and possibilities.
